These are sketches from my Painting II sketchbook with added Guash coloring. They are early ideas for our new landscape assignment that needs to be uniquely different from the typical landscape where there is the basic rendering of the sky, background, and foreground.

Your sketches are good starting points for this assignment, however, I would encourage you to think about landscapes even more broadly or abstractly. You mention a typical landscape as a rendering of the sky, background, and foreground, yet I think it's important to look at "typical" landscapes and note the use of nature. Often times nature is used in a "typical" landscape and even in your final sketch for the assignment you are using nature. I would encourage you to push your idea of a landscape even further, unless you are completely interested in nature and that is your theme. I noticed in your final sketch you have a tree stump, a stump often times could be connected to the cutting down of trees which then brings me to ideas of the environment. I wonder if you could deal with this idea with something other than a tree stump. Try not to be so literal, your audience doesn't necessarily want to be hit over the head with an idea, more importantly your audience isn't stupid, so you don't need to spell everything out for them either. I think your sketches are great though, it's nice to see you put a lot of work into a sketch with the use of gauche.
